We the undersigned petition the council to preserve effective democratic scrutiny, fair representation, transparency, and long-standing civic traditions within Walsall Council.

Residents of Walsall are deeply concerned by recent governance changes which reduce scrutiny and weaken accountability within the council chamber. Many local people believe these changes concentrate power into fewer hands while limiting proper oversight and balanced democratic representation.

There is also significant concern regarding the abandonment of long-standing civic traditions surrounding the appointment of the Mayor of Walsall. Historically, the role recognised long service, experience, and dedication to the borough through a fair and respected convention. Residents feel this tradition has been disregarded, undermining the civic values and continuity that have shaped Walsall for generations.

Walsall has a proud history, identity, and democratic culture that deserves to be respected and protected regardless of political control.

We therefore call on Walsall Council to:

• Protect and strengthen scrutiny and oversight within council decision-making
• Ensure fair democratic representation across council chambers and committees
• Maintain transparency and accountability in governance
• Respect and preserve long-standing civic traditions and conventions
• Properly consult residents before implementing major constitutional or governance changes

This petition is not about party politics. It is about protecting democratic standards, civic fairness, and the traditions and accountability that the people of Walsall value and expect from their local government.
